Global Patriot Day – March 20th 2009

by Mark Lovett on March 20, 2009

Despite advances which have occurred in the past century with regards to technological innovation, human rights and economic growth, much of the world is still beset by such problems as widespread hunger, severe poverty, preventable diseases, limited access to medical treatment, lack of proper education and the torment of conflict and bloodshed.

Examining this dire situation reveals that the perceived barriers of ethnicity, religion, nationality and gender continue to serve as roadblocks to solving these issues. The Global Patriot movement was founded in 2008, promoting the idea of Patriotism Without Borders, with the basic belief that we are members of one family that spans the globe and should therefore dedicate ourselves to advancing the health and well-being of everyone.

Why March 20th?

For thousands of years the first day of Spring has been recognized for its message of renewal and rebirth, a time when we can all look forward to a season of new growth, beauty and wonderment. To many around the world it feels as though we have been weathering a long metaphorical Winter with our planet suffering from the storms of violent conflict, environmental degradation and denial of basic human rights.

In times like these we need to envision the world as we want it to be, a world where human rights and equality are honored and individuals are kept safe from the ravages of war, a world in which the basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, education and medical treatment are available to all, and our society is one which respects the fragile planet on which we live.

What You Can Do

Your personal actions mean the most, as each of us must lead by example. Help others, donate to worthy causes, live a life of love, honor, respect and tolerance. Shift your consciousness to a more global perspective that proclaims – One Planet, One People.

As a way to extend the reach of this movement a Global Patriot Page has been created on Facebook and you are invited to join. The objective of this group is to provide a common place for those who believe in the cause to connect and communicate. Members are encouraged to invite their friends, participate in discussions of global issues, and post comments on making the world a better place.

All compromise is based on give and take, but there can be no give and take on fundamentals. Any compromise on mere fundamentals is a surrender. For it is all give and no take. – Mohandas Gandhi

Financing Change

Another powerful way in which we can change the world is through microfinance, a method of aiding people who lack the financial resources required to start and expand businesses. In honor of this day Global Patriot has partnered with OptInNow to fund the dreams of two women. By simply joining the Global Patriot Group at OptInNow and making a contribution you can help these two entrepreneurs fulfill their dreams. Take a moment to read about Margaret Oforiwaa in Ghana and Edna Quijada in the Philippines and help change a life.

Changing Our Mindset

Man is man because he is free to operate within the framework of his destiny. He is free to deliberate, to make decisions, and to choose between alternatives. He is distinguished from animals by his freedom to do evil or to do good and to walk the high road of beauty or tread the low road of ugly degeneracy. – Martin Luther King, Jr., The Measures of Man, 1959.

Global Patriotism represents a dedication to building a more just and sustainable future. It asks each of us to think beyond race, religion, gender and nationality and embrace the belief that we are all connected in a very real and profound way. With this approach we can address the world’s most pressing problems while walking the high road of beauty.

I missed the official Global Patriot Day, but that didn’t stop me from making a contribution to OptInNow. Thank you for always asking a little more from all of us. We have it to give.

Hi Mark-
Sad I missed Global Patriot day…but on the bright side, I think I celebrate it each day without even realizing. Glad the day exists as many need reminders.
