I'd encourage people to find a cause they care about and focus their attention on "being a local" on those sites over long periods of time (participate in discussion, point people to those discussions via social media, share their content etc) Over time, many small actions and repeated sharing can show people not only that you care, but raises awareness of your personal community over social media.
