I’ve always been a big supporter of capitalism. In tandem with democracy it can be a powerful force for improving society as a whole and empowering individuals to fulfill their dreams and benefit the world. But…and this is a very big but…when a lust for power or addiction to wealth take hold, the general public often ends up suffering.
The root of the problem is that most global corporations see their primary objective as generating profits in order to serve the shareholders, and if that way of thinking becomes the mindset ruling day-to-day decisions, the health of the planet and its citizens takes a back seat to this desire for profitability. But there’s an alternative to the common path of creating C Corporations that are focused on the bottom line.
Our vision is simple yet ambitious: to create a new sector of the economy which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. This sector will be comprised of a new type of corporation – the B Corporation – that meets rigorous and independent standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
Imagine that…a corporation that’s dedicated to social and environmental problems, but within the context of creating a profitable company that thrives along with society – that’s essentially a Certified B Corporation.
The “B” stands for Benefit (maybe the “C” in C Corporation actually stands for Cash) and there are three basic tenants of operating a Certified B Corporation:
- Meet transparent and comprehensive standards of social and environmental performance;
- Legally expand their corporate responsibilities to include consideration of stakeholder interests; and
- Amplify the voice of sustainable business and for-profit social enterprise through the power of the unifying B Corporation brand.
Through our collective efforts we can create a better business climate that protects the planet, and B Corporations are one way of making that dream a reality. Petition your local, state and national politicians to support Benefit Corporation Legislation!
As Global Patriots we should all demand sustainable business practices!
