It’s often said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but in this case, a cartoon may be worth thousands of lives. Just as society faces a dilemma in regards to how processed food causes health issues, the same can be said for pollution, where the cost of treating illnesses that are caused by toxins released into the environment is externalized, thus straining an already overburdened healthcare system.
John Klossner won the Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon Contest by drawing a satirical depiction of how pollution benefits society by creating jobs. His cartoon graced the 2012 Scientific Integrity Calendar cover, as well as the month of June.
